Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (1 CEU)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection involving any part of the urinary system, including urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidney. UTIs are the most common type of healthcare-associated infection reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). Among UTIs acquired in the hospital, approximately 75% are associated with a urinary catheter, which is a tube inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain urine. Between 15-25% of hospitalized patients receive urinary catheters during their hospital stay. About 95% of UTIs occur when bacteria ascend the urethra to the bladder. The risk of a UTI increases 5% each day the urinary catheter remains in place.  What is shocking is; up to 69% of CAUTI may be preventable.

CAUTI is the leading cause of secondary hospital acquired blood stream infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are tied with pneumonia as the second most common type of healthcare-associated infection . CDC reports that UTIs account for more than 15% of infections reported by acute care hospitals. It is important to remember that the vast majority of UTI’s are caused by perineal bacteria ascending from the urethra, into the bladder, and then up the ureters to the kidney
